Anatol Sys.

(1959-2005)

Sys, who died at the age of 46, left behind three volumes of poetry that became the voice of the generation shaped by Belarus’s transformation. The most renowned of them — Pan Les — stretches between a deeply pagan vision of Belarusian identity and the poet’s tragic solitude.

Nearly forty years later, Sys’s lyricism remains strikingly relevant. Filled with primal force and a belief in the fundamental powers of nature, it stands in opposition to overstimulation and consumerist stagnation. It is at once ruthlessly personal and profoundly patriotic — directed against the tyranny of postSoviet vandals. By reaching for Sys’s works, the authors share his concern for Belarusian identity and individual freedom.

Sokrat Janowicz

(1936-2013)

A Polish borderland writer, celebrator of Krynki, of Belarusian nationality, creating in both Belarusian and Polish.

Sokrat Yanovich regarded the written word as the highest of the arts, while visual art and music served, in his view, as extensions and fulfillments of that word. Eugeniush Kabatc described him as a master of the pen and an interpreter of Belarusian national thought — a writer who sought, through his work, to provoke his compatriots into overcoming passivity and engaging in patriotic action.

Kabatc considered «Hatniaye stahoddzie» (“The Family [Home] Century”) to be one of Yanovich’s most intriguing and perhaps most important works. In this novel, “the writer, usually rebellious to the point of defiance, this time weaves the saga of his own household with the lyrical, melancholic calm of a philosopher who knows that everything ends with us — with our nest left empty, with our ideas squandered by a heartless world…” Kabatc believed that nearly everything in Yanovich’s books is in some way entangled with the history of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. «Hatniaye stahoddzie», in his view, is “a family saga from the borderland of cultures, written not only with a deep understanding of contemporary history, but also with a painful sense of sorrow accompanying the drama of the village and the people who embody it.”
